bones: almost! but not quite! but almost!

they got significantly closer over the course of the scene // fox promotional photo
When I finally finished watched Bones late Wednesday night from Canada, I had FOUR chat windows going nutso in my GChat. (I promise this isn’t a story about how popular I am, because I’m really not that popular, except sometimes in circles that like to illegally download Bones from Canada.) Everyone was FREAKING OUT about the end of “A Night in the Bones Museum,” and rightly so. Because … wait for it … Booth and Brennan aaaaaaalmost kissed.
I. Know. This is BIG NEWS.
They did not kiss–Angela interrupted their moment–but They Totally Almost Did.
Now, I’ll be honest, that was definitely the closest they’ve ever come before–there was LEANING!–and, like some of my fellow subversive conversants, I wondered as I waited for the interruption if there was any possibility their lips would actually touch. Sure, we all pretty much knew they wouldn’t make it, but … maybe they would. It was a cute moment, made all the more adorable by the tie-tying and hair-touching that followed their near-miss. It was almost like they realized their big moment had passed, but they didn’t just couldn’t leave without a little touch. His especially has a, “Well, you touched me first, so it’s okay for me to touch you, I guess,” type feel.
Oh, you’re sensing it.
Here comes the but.
BUT it really makes no sense. This show continues to get more and more ridiculous with each passing week that Booth and Brennan go without hooking up. The reason why they didn’t kiss, why they had to settle for tie-tying and hair-touching, is because it’s a show written by writers who refuse to write more than will-they-or-won’t-they. In real life, they would have given in to the sexual tension a long time ago. The best thing is to just not get too excited about what might happen in this moment or this episode or this season, because the resolution to this storyline is a long way away. If it’s not Angela interrupting the moment, it’ll be Hodgins or an oven timer or any number of cheap, contrived plot devices until the writers decide they’re ready. And with ratings strong and steady while they’re sticking to the status quo, I see no incentive for them to do anything differently. It’s sad but it’s true.
I blogged something really similar to all you said here. Though I LOVED that last scene it left me more frustrated than anything else. I mean, come on, do the Squints have some kind of radar that lets them know they’re going for it so you’d better hurry up and interrupt things? Like you said if it’s not Angela interrupting them it’s Hodgins…or it will be a phone call or an anvil or a freakin’ meteorite, you know. I know the writers are trying to hold out as long as possible but I think they’ve held on far too long at this point. Sure, unresolved sexual tension is fun and all but at a certain point it loses its luster. You’re absolutely right when you say that any real-life couple would have long ago given into the kind of tension these two have. I don’t understand why Hart Hanson & Co. don’t see how much more they could do with these two if they let them get together. The show could go down a totally new road, one that fans would absolutely eat up as long as it’s handled well. I know Hart has said there will be serious progress made this year for Brennan and Bones and I’m eager to see what he’s got in store. I’m hoping that last scene was the start of it all, but I suppose that remains to be seen.
Very reminiscent of a conversation we had
Yep.
Well said. I understand the writers had to grow the friendship and understand circa season 1 and in the mid of season 2 there was a geniuine progression on the sexual tension and attraction towards one another. Season 3 was in my opinion, working on that tension and attraction and also learning about each other, influencing one another and developing that tension even more with Sweets (therapy) being the conduit for emotions and feelings to get out in the open without doing anything too drastic.
Season 4 is where the fun began for us and after a few seasons behind us and under their belts they could now play around with the will-they-or-won’t-they aspect of the relationship/friendship/partnership. This for me started on episode 4×03 and heck, in 4×04 I thought they were going to kiss at the end. All the touching, spending time after work with your work partner, relaxing in their homes, making dinner together and more deep down emotional confessions really has worked for me and I think the fandom in general.
I agree that they really have to resolve the tension in some sorts and having this new brain tumour ‘coma’ plot device may be irritating and really just another reason to draw out the will-they-won’t-they story line by having Booth re-learn and ‘learn to love’ Brennan again and get back their ‘relationship’ feng shui…
BUT… as a massive shipper who has watched that 5×05 ending 43 times in 15 minutes and watched ‘the scene’ another 47 times on repeat, I really hate all the tension and wish they would do something with it already. I understand that they are technically a couple, that they do couply stuff but come on! It’s got to have a little bit of reality and despite Brennan being against love and marriage or supposedly against it and Booth just waiting until she believes in love, which is what the whole line “do you love me?” in ep 4×26 really meant… I’ve gone off track. Basically, I understand that Booth is waiting for Brennan to believe in love. She has come a long way since the pilot – the character – and now the last hurdle is believing in love and realising that Booth has been there and waiting for her all along but seriously, there has to be a way of allowing them to be together as a couple and then have even bigger obstables now; as they work together. How would them being together affect their partnership as it’s crossed that line and going into a more personal aspect, stealing moments, touches and glances as the girls from Chaos in General mentioned.
To end my little side dish off, I really do want the writers to do the right thing; which imo is getting them together, which brings about even more entertaining and interesting story lines.
