the office: not a bad day

Now that my flaily-ness has somewhat worn off after Thursday’s big wedding episode, I guess it’s time to do a little rehash. But I think the most important thing I could say about this episode is how wrong I was. I had blogged about the spoilers leading up to “Niagara.” They were confusing, with reports (and pictures) coming in about church weddings and boat weddings and cut ties and dance moves. Best we could put together was that Jim and Pam’s ceremony was such a zoo, they skipped out on their own reception for a boat ride.
We were wrong.
Nope, Jim and Pam skipped out on their own ceremony, getting married by themselves before the captain of the Maid of the Mist. What resulted was by far the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen on television, with snippets of their boat wedding interspersed with the crazy antics that happened once they returned to the church for their scheduled ceremony. Yeah, it wasn’t super-sappy; there was no mention of Baby Tuna at either ceremony, Jim did spill the beans about the baby in a ridiculous foot-in-mouth way, and their kiss at the altar apparently got edited down.
But, first of all, all that stuff that got cut down will be on the DVD. Even if that’s eleven and a half months away, we’ll still see it eventually.

And second of all, it didn’t even matter. Their wedding was perfect, even without Jim fawning over Pam’s belly (although I’ll admit I love the picture at right in part because of the hand placement) or the baby kicking or even officially hearing the “I do”s.
The best part of it all, though, is that for as sweet as that episode was, I have to believe it’s not even going to compare to the one-hour baby-centric episode in February. Although, see, here’s the thing about that. I’m starting to wonder how that’s really going to work. The Office is not on the Discovery Health Channel; I have a hard time believing that the cameras are actually going to follow Jim and Pam into the delivery room. I bet we see the baby’s birth through Michael’s eyes, as he annoyingly/sweetly sits in the waiting room throughout Pam’s inevitably-lengthy labor and delivery. We might get a few shots through the window, get status updates from Jim periodically, or even hear Pam laboring from afar, but I highly doubt we’re going to really see Pam all that much.
The only thing that really has to happen is that it has to end with Jim introducing his daughter baby–perhaps once Jim realizes that Michael stayed all night, he’ll invite him into the room to meet the baby or take the baby into the hallway. Anyway, my expectations for that episode include only two things: Jim and Baby Tuna. Even Pam is optional.
It was a very good (and funny!) episode. But the running away to get married was very similar to Lily and Marshall’s wedding on How I Met Your Mother. I was a little disappointed that that originality was stolen.
